Abstract:

In this investigation, comparative evaluation of trypanocidal activities of Cissus multistriata and Saba florida (Benth) leaf extracts in the treatment of trypanosome brucei brucei -infected rats were carried out. The albino rats were treated for 7 days with 200 and 400mg/kg b.w of plant extracts intraperitoneally (ip) after establishment of parasitemia. No significant (P< 0.05) changes in body weights were observed in all the groups. Improvements of packed cell volume (PCV) as well as red blood cell count s (RBC) were observed in the rats treated with Cissus multistriata leaf extract and Berenil (standard drug). White blood cell counts (WBC) did not change significantly (P< 0.05) in the infected treated groups. The results also showed that treatment significantly increased total serum protein with Saba florida leaf extract demonstrating greater potential in a graded dose response manner. In conclusion, the hydromethanolic leaf extracts of the two plants had trypanocidal activities at different concentrations and they could be useful in the management of trypanosomiasis.
